Ciao, iniziamo questo articolo subito con una domanda e se la risposta è “SI“, siete curiose della cultura giapponese come noi e ne siamo felici, se invece la risposta è “NO“, vi spieghiamo subito in breve di cosa si tratta.

🔸Kamishibai (纸 芝 居), che può essere tradotto come “dramma di carta”, (da Kami: Paper e Shibai: Theatre / Drama) è una tecnica narrativa giapponese che appartiene a una lunga tradizione di storie di strada, la cui origine può essere fatta risalire ai templi buddisti del Giappone del XII secolo.
Il dispositivo si basa sullo scorrimento di singole tavole illustrate, che vengono inserite dal narratore (il kamishibaya) all’interno di un piccolo teatro in legno (il butai) e attraverso il loro scorrimento danno vita ad una storia.

Ora che sapete cosa è un kamishibai, vi illustriamo il progetto a cui abbiamo partecipato.
Nella nostra città si sono tenuti due laboratori che prevedevano la realizzazione del Kamishibai, quello di falegnameria a cura di TESTA DI LEGNO 🔨 e serigrafia a cura di Else Edizioni 🎨

Eravamo divisi in gruppi, cosi ci siamo divise e abbiamo realizzato due storie diverse di 4 illustrazioni monocromatiche con i nostri rispettivi gruppi.
Non era la prima volta che vedevamo la procedura della serigrafia e siamo state felici di sperimentarla ancora. Purtroppo non è facile poterla usare anche a casa se non si ha a disposizione una fotoemulsione idrosolubile e una fonto a luce ultravioletta con cui si fissa l’immagine sul telaio.

Con il laboratorio di falegnameria, invece abbiamo costruito la struttura in legno dei kamishibai, una versione piccola e trasportabile, altrimenti possono essere molto più grandi.
Sicuramente all’inizio è stato impegnativo, non avevamo molta pratica con questi utensili, ma é stata un esperienza interessante.

🔸Kamishibai (纸 芝 居), which can be translated as “paper drama”, (from Kami: Paper and Shibai: Theater / Drama) is a Japanese storytelling technique that belongs to a long tradition of street stories, whose origin can be traced back to the Buddhist temples of Japan of the twelfth century.
The device is based on the scrolling of individual illustrated tables, which are inserted by the narrator (the kamishibaya) inside a small wooden theater (the butai) and through their scrolling they give life to a story.

Now that you know what a kamishibai is, we show you the project we participated in.
In our city two workshops were held that involved the realization of the Kamishibai, that of carpentry by TESTA DI LEGNO 🔨 and screen printing by Else Edizioni 🎨

We were divided into groups, so we divided and made two different stories of 4 monochromatic illustrations with our respective groups.
It was not the first time we saw the screen printing procedure and we were happy to experience it again. Unfortunately it is not easy to be able to use it even at home if you do not have a water-soluble photoemulsion and an ultraviolet light source with which the image is fixed on the frame.

With the carpentry workshop, instead we built the wooden structure of the kamishibai, a small and transportable version, otherwise they can be much larger.
Surely at the beginning it was challenging, we didn’t have much practice with these tools, but it was an interesting experience.

Torniamo condividendo con voi questa recente commissione, dove ci era stato richiesto di dipingere una t-shirt per regalo.
Questa è la seconda volta che ci ritroviamo a dipingere questo soggetto, la prima volta lo facemmo per una t-shirt per noi stesse.
A qesto giro abbiamo deciso di impreziosirla un po’ di più, utilizzando una colore metallizzato per la scritta sul retro.
La cliente è stata molto soddisfatta e siamo state felici di questo ordine anche perchè la committenza proveniva dall’Australia.
Quindi è stata una bella soddisfazione che qualcosa fatto da noi facesse un viaggio così lungo.

Speriamo vi piaccia e vi ricordiamo che siamo sempre aperte ad una commissione di questo tipo. Sopra la t-shirt realizziamo quello che voi volete, non è la prima volta che facciamo questo tipo di commissione.

Craft New Commission: Glass Vase Decoration

Hi! A few months ago we received the commission for the decoration of two glass vases.
The two vases, different in shape and size, had to have two different decorations: for the large vase we were asked for an abstract motif while for the small vase we had to create designs such as butterflies and ladybugs.
This is the final result.

Below we show you the steps and materials used for decoration!

1) The vases in their original state were simply smooth and transparent, without color.

2) We used a silver paste, which simulates the lead paste used in the assembly of the stained glass windows, to make the decorations in the vases. Once applied, we let it dry.

3) The final result. For the drawing of the butterflies and ladybugs we used a trace of a sketch to make them as precise as possible.
The squares of the large vase, on the other hand, were made without a basic sketch because they did not need to be precise.

4) These are the colors we used for coloring.
They are specific for glass surfaces, remain a little dense but there is also a transparent thinner available.
They are quite expensive and we bought them at an art supplies store.

5) This is the result after painting.
The color for the glass remains transparent and creates a beautiful play of colors.
Once spread, we let it dry overnight.

6) The next day we put the two jars in the oven for quick cooking. This is to ensure that the color for the glass sets well so that it will resist washing.
Of course, it is best to first make sure that the holder is made of glass and not plastic.
After this step the jars were ready!

Paper Roses

Ciao!
Vi mostriamo l’ultimo lavoro artigianale fatto con la carta crespa.
Abbiamo realizzato questo bouquet di rose di carta crespa per il compleanno di nostra madre, ed una è stata sfumata con del blu per ricreare la rosa blu che a lei piace molto.
Per fortuna abbiamo anche molta carta regalo da parte cosi abbiamo potuto realizzare anche un bel incartamento con colore a tema.
Per impreziosire di più le rose è stata data sopra una pennellata di colla e poi spolverato sopra dei glitter azzurri.
E’ la prima volta che realizziamo le rose e sapere da molti commenti che loro sembrano vere ci ha fatto molto piacere. Continueremo di sicuro a sperimentare altri fiori con la carta crespa.
Naturalmente se qualcuno è interessato può richiedere commissioni anche di questo tipo, basta che ci contattiate cosi da organizzarci.

We show you the latest paper work done with crepe paper.
We made this bouquet of crepe paper roses for our mother’s birthday and one was blended with blue to recreate the blue rose that she really likes.

Black Butterflies

Hello!
We share a new work with the combination of papier-mâché.

It is always an original illustration of ours, entitled “Black Butterflies”, which was incorporated into a frame of paper- mâché, decorated with flowers, the Chrysanthemums that reproduce the flowers of the illustration, made with crepe paper.

Its concept: What is hidden within us? sometimes the apparent serenity can hide darkness.
Butterflies are the manifestation of the psyche, of the soul, and if they are black they also represent our never-overcome phobias, our insecurities, what is beyond our control; it is the absence of points of reference and can be a source of great discomfort and terror that devour us from within.

We chose the Chrysanthemum because it gave us two meanings: Here in Italy it is associated with the feast of the dead (early November) due to its blossoming near this anniversary while in Japan it is a symbol of life, it is also a symbol of peace ( anyway a positive meaning for the whole east); so in the work the chrysanthemums are the death that comes but also the peace that can find the soul.

Condividiamo un nuovo lavoro con la combinazione di cartapesta.

È sempre una nostra illustrazione originale, intitolata “Black Butterflies”, che è stata incorporata in una cornice di cartapesta, decorata con fiori, i crisantemi che riproducono i fiori dell’illustrazione, realizzati con carta crespa.

Il suo concetto: cosa c’è nascosto dentro di noi? A volte l’apparente serenità può nascondere l’oscurità.
Le farfalle sono la manifestazione della psiche, dell’anima, e se sono nere rappresentano anche le nostre fobie mai superate, le nostre insicurezze, ciò che è al di là del nostro controllo; è l’assenza di punti di riferimento e può essere fonte di grande disagio e terrore che ci divora dall’interno.

Abbiamo scelto il crisantemo perché ci ha dato due significati: qui in Italia è associato al giorno dei morti (inizio Novembre) a causa della sua fioritura vicino a questo anniversario, mentre in Giappone è un simbolo di vita, è anche un simbolo di pace (comunque un significato positivo per tutto l’Est); così nell’opera i crisantemi sono la morte che viene ma anche la pace che può trovare l’anima.

Simbolismo:
– TENTACOLI DI POLPO: Nei tempi antichi, questi polpi erano visti come messaggeri dell’abisso, un simbolo di presa perturbante. È considerato un animale furbo e ambiguo. Inoltre era legato alla reputazione dell’animale afrodisiaco, che poteva portare sogni osceni e lussuriosi.
– OCCHI: Gli occhi nei tentacoli possono avere due significati: il primo è l’occhio aperto che ti fissa costantemente e osserva ogni tua mossa, come il grande fratello . Il secondo può essere un invito a guardare oltre le apparenze senza essere influenzato dagli altri
– FIORI: simbolo della vita e come ogni fiore prim o poi appassirà. Il fiore di ciliegio (Sakura / “桜” in giapponese) per la sua delicatezza, il breve periodo della sua esistenza, è il simbolo della fragilità. Metafora della natura effimera della vita, un aspetto della tradizione culturale giapponese ha spesso associato l’influenza buddhista e trova espressione nel concetto di “mono no aware”. La caducità dei fiori, la loro estrema bellezza e la rapida morte, sono stati associati alla morte.
– LUNA:La luna è un simbolo di vita, di cambiamenti costanti e anche ipnotici. La luna nelle sue fasi ci ricorda questo tipo di processo senza fine  e rigenerazione

Symbolism:
— OCTOPUS TENTACLES: In ancient times, these octopus was seen as messenger of the abyss, a symbol of disturbing grip. It is considered a sly and ambiguous animal. In addition he was connected the reputation of aphrodisiac animal, which could bring obscene and lustful dreams.
— EYES: The eyes in the tentacles can have two meanings: the first is the open eye that gazes steadily and observes your every move, like a big brother. The second one can be an invitation to look beyond appearances without being influenced by others
— FLOWERS: symbol of life as the flower will wither sooner or later. Flower Cherry (Sakura/ “桜 ” in Japanese) for its delicacy, the short period of its existence, is the symbol of fragility. Metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition often associated Buddhist influence and which finds expression in the concept of “mono no aware”. The transience of flowers, their extreme beauty and quick death, has been associated with death.
— MOON: The moon is a symbol of life, of constant change, and also hypnotic. The moon in its phases reminds us this kind of never-ending process of recycling and regeneration.

The first work in papier-mache

Hello everyone!!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

From the end of November we started to take an interest in the papier-mâché technique, rediscovering it also with new methods.
We find it very interesting and beautiful in its simplicity, which also allows you to recycle paper at home, we have in fact used sheets of old designs that we did not like anymore.

The first attempt we wanted to try was to make a puppet of Santa Claus as a table center for the holidays.
Here we show you the photos of some steps and the completed work.

pieces of cardboard put to soak for one night (if you want even more) in hot water

We covered a plastic bottle to give body to the puppet, wetting the strips (three layers of paper) with a mix of water and vinyl glue

We wet a sheet of paper in the mix of glue and water to give it the shape of a coat train. When it dried it kept that shape

With the hot glue gun we added the head, hat and arms

Spent one night we blended the cardboard to soak, then we squeezed (leaving a little wet) and finally we mixed the pulp of paper with vinyl glue

We covered the puppet with that paper paste so that it became more resistant. When it has dried, we have sanded down the surface with abrasive paper and started to color it (We have added a stick with hot glue using hot glue).

With hot glue we attached the cotton to make the coat, hat and beard of Santa Claus.

The final result. On the hat we added a decorative holly

We are now trying to find the best way to use this technique, since we have found many variations in the various tutorials.
This is our first job, we hope you enjoy it.

Vasi dipinti (Painted vases)

Per Natale abbiamo realizzato dei vasi dipinti con i colori per il vetro, che resistono all’acqua rispetto alle tempere e la trasparenza rende effetti particolari rispetto all’acrilico coprente.

La decorazione richiesta era la frutta e abbiamo deciso di dipingere sul vetro senza usare la pasta di piombo per tracciare il disegno, cosi da dare un effetto più pittorico.

 

For Christmas we have created vases painted with colors for glass, which resist water compared to tempera and transparency makes special effects compared to opaque acrylic.

Durante gli anni in accademia abbiamo potuto imparare la tecnica artigianale della rilegatura di un libro, cioè il procedimento con cui viene materialmente assemblato un libro unendo un certo numero di fogli separati (di carta o altro materiale) alla copertina.
Realizziamo rilegature in brossura a filo refe e rilegatura alla giapponese, in cui l’uso del filo rende più resistente la tenuta dei fogli e  garantisce la durata del libro.
Inoltre realizziamo anche cartelle di diverse misure a seconda dell’utilizzo e anche scatole che possano anche contenere anche libri.
